March 7 - March 15, 2008
Day 1 Friday, March 7 - Departure

Departure at 7:22 p.m. from Washington Dulles airport for Florence, Italy, via Frankfurt on United/Lufthansa. Arrival around 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Day 2 Saturday, March  8 - Florence

Upon arrival in Florence, transfer to Hotel Delle Nazioni, a three-star hotel conveniently located close to the railway station

In the afternoon we’ll stroll through the heart of the city and visit the Piazza del Duomo, the Campanile and Baptistry, Piazza della Signoria and the famous Ponte Vecchio bridge over the Arno river. Tickets should be purchased in advance to see David’s statue in the Accademia.

Day 3 Sunday, March 9 - Florence

Suggested visits: the Bargello museum and the Uffizi Gallery (tickets should be purchased months in advance)

Free afternoon and evening.

Day 4 Monday, March 10 – Siena and San Gimignano

Today we will take a motorcoach for a full day tour of Siena and San Gimignano, two medieval cities with beautiful towers, a famous scallop-shaped piazza, and narrow streets. Siena’s Duomo and Palazzo Publico are two of the purest examples of Italian Gothic architecture. Our visit includes entrance to the Duomo. Free evening back in Florence.
Day 5 Tuesday, March 11 - Venice

Following breakfast we will board our train to Venice where we will stay at the Abbazia hotel, just a block from the station. In the afternoon, we can take a vaporetto cruise along the Grand Canal and visit St.Mark’s Basilica. Free evening.

Day 6 Wednesday, March 12 - Venice

I suggest a visit to the Doge’s Palace in the morning. Free time to explore the narrow back streets and canals, shop, or visit the islands of Murano and Burano.

Day 7 Thursday, March 13 - Florence

After breakfast we will board our train for Florence. Suggested sites to visit in Florence: Medici Chapels, Santa Croce Church, Museum of San Marco, Pitti Palace, Santa Maria Novella Church, climb the Duomo or Giotto tower at sunset.

Day 8 Friday, March 14 - Florence

Enjoy a leisure day exploring Florence and surrounding areas (Fiesole, Pisa). Some of you may wish to take the train to Rome for the day.

Day 9 Saturday, March 15 – Return

After breakfast transfer to the Florence Airport for our return flight to Dulles via Frankfurt. Arrival in Washington around 8:00 p.m.

Cost information for the Florence/Venice trip
The price for the trip - from $1,547 based on double occupancy
The Price Includes:
  • United/Lufthansa flights from Dulles airport via Frankfurt
  • Airport taxes and fuel surcharge at $300
  • Five night hotel accommodation, double occupancy, Hotel Delle Nazioni in Florence, and two nights at Hotel Abbazia in Venice.
  • Continental breakfast daily.
  • Airport/hotel/airport transfers on arrival and departure.
  • Full day tour of Siena and San Gimignano.
  • Second-class round trip train ticket to Venice.
  • Possibly tuition for up to 6 credits for full-time students at any Penn State campus. (if taking both courses)

Everyone needs a valid passport.(valid at least til Sept. 2008) In case you are not an American citizen a visa may be required.

This trip is primarily for Penn State students registered for Italian 130 or Comm 250 (Italian Film). A number of seats are reserved for these students. However, all Penn State York students, faculty, staff, and family are welcome on a first-come first-served basis. If necessary, a waiting list may be created.

Terms and Conditions

Gate1Travel terms depend on contracts with United/Lufthansa and the hotels. Regulations below must be strictly enforced. All cancellations must be received in writing. Payment must be made by check or money order (Gate1Travel).

  • Deposit: $100 airline fee per seat is due prior to September 21, 2007
  • Second payment: $300 due prior to October 31, 2007
  • Final payment: balance due December 14, 2007.
  • Late fee: $50, applicable for registration and/or balance payments received December 15, 2007 or later.

All cancellations must be received in writing. We strongly recommend that you avail yourself with travel insurance as a protection against these penalties. Gate1Travel offers group travel insurance for $99.
Following penalties will apply:

  • $200 per person 99 to 61 days prior to departure
  • 35% land cost & 90% air cost:60 to 31 days prior
  • 50% land cost & 90% air cost: 30 to 1 day prior
100% of trip cost: Day of departure/No-show
