RELEASE BAR

To Build
:Make from 2" x 4" lumber.Release mechanism is a set of kitchen tongs.Drill out the rivet on the kitchen tongs and screw them to the board as shown.Do not tighten screw too much - tongs must pivot on board easily.Attach a small screw to each end of the 2" x 4" (not shown).Attach one end of a rubberband to one arm of the tongs and the other end to one of the screws.Repeat for the other arm of the tongs. The rubberbands should hold the tongs open.A series of pairs of holes are drilled in the 2" x 4" as shown, allowing a separate small block on wood with two protruding nails (not shown) to be inserted to hold the tong arms closed on a water balloon .The holes in the 2" x 4" should be drilled so that the nails can easily slip into or out ofthe holes. To release the balloon, the student simply removes the block of wood with the nails freeing the tongs to be pulled open by the rubberbands. The other side of the release bar has two pipe clamps attached to allow the assembly to slide on the conduit much like the cave assembly.  Click here to return to How to Build.
